If you are like me, Spring is a time to clear the cobwebs and take a fresh look at life, home and business. After all, if you are an entrepreneur all three go together they are inextricably linked. As I write this blog, behind me are boxes and bags full of things to donate that no longer serve me - that feels good! It's not just physical stuff that can no longer serve us either, there are those 'dusty' thoughts and old behaviours that keep us from moving forward. We can work on shedding them as well. My coaching questions for you today are: Where does your life need brightening up? Where are the dark shadows and cobwebs? What areas do you want to improve? Shed more light on? How can I help you to do that? Here are Three Action Steps for Clearing the Cobwebs... (I will cover this in more detail in our coaching together) From a little acorn grew... When we arrive on this planet, we come hard wired with innate talents, each one of us unique. Then our environment begins to shape us - as children we accept at face value what our caregivers tell us about us. We adopt the labels and beliefs that are applied to us - right or wrong. Those who care for us do the best they know how. If you plant an acorn, the only thing it can do is grow into an oak , however how the acorn is nurtured determines whether or not it grows into a mighty oak or a scraggly oak who struggles with confidence and self image. The way we are nurtured can reflect the way we project our image to the world - the way we communicate. As adults we get to choose whether or not we will continue to adopt the way we have been nurtured - we get to choose to be better or bitter. Not everyone will carry baggage from the past, some of us do, and it can affect how successful we can become. No matter what your past, we all have 'stuff' we need to deal with now and then. Some time ago I was looking for a book recommended by a friend, it took me a month to track down a copy – seems it is the most stolen title in the Chapter’s Stores – they can’t keep it on the shelves – strange. My friend said I should read it because it had references to Personality Type. I am always looking for patterns that support or confirm the theory of type – and frankly everywhere I go I see relationships and patterns – and try to see how they fit. I was so engrossed in the ‘doing’ of looking for the patterns in this little book of wisdom that I almost missed the key message. Sometimes things don’t fit – they just are. Of course a fish can’t whistle – it is not in its nature – I can’t whistle either, although I could learn – I choose not to because I choose just to be me. If my environment made it necessary for me to whistle – I would spend a lot of time not being me – and doing something I don’t like to do – just like being in the wrong job or marriage. Most of us spend a lot of time trying to learn to whistle. Can We Really Manage Time? Of course not! Time is finite! We are allotted a certain amount of time each day, and it is up to us how we spend it. It is interesting that we use the word 'spend', since we know that our attitude regarding time is similar to that of money. We have a finite amount, no matter how rich or poor - and how we spend our money and time are in direct correlation to: - Our Personality - Our Upbringing - How we are influenced by peers and family - Our past experiences - Our current behaviour You have $86,400 To Spend!(Source 'More Games Trainers Play - Scannell/Newstrom - 1983) Play along as we learn how we spend our time (click read more to play the game): Your uncle Harry has left you $86,400 in his will, but Uncle Harry has made some stipulations, if they are not followed the inheritance goes to a shelter for unwanted ferrets.
a. The money must be spent with the next 24 hours; b. Stores will be close for a major portion of this time. c. You have to work tomorrow - your boss needs you. You can get help from family, they can help you spend, or think about what they would like you to spend it on. What will you spend the money on? House? How much? Car? Other? How I spent my Money? Did I allow others to determine what I would buy? Why? _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ What type of purchases did I make? __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ So what does Uncle Harry's will have to do with time management? Each of us gets 86,400 seconds -- no more, no less every day -- and how you spend that time, or allow others to spend it for you, is what time management is all about. In fact, we cannot manage time per se, but we can manage our attitude toward time and how much of it we hold dear. This simple exercise can be very revealing about what our relationship with time is. We can begin to examine how we can allow others to claim our time. **Free Time Management eBook** What dream are you putting off because you simply don’t have the time? What one thing do you think you could do for 30m each day that would push you toward doing what you really want to do from what you have to do or what others think you should do? If there is a common theme I hear from clients and friends it’s this… “I would if I could, but I have to this first so I can make money.” Don’t get me wrong I am not any different, we all need to put food on the table, so we adopt roles or work that may not be our life’s dream – but does that mean you have to give up on it? NO! |
